Misneach & Finches in Kilmainham (Two Book Set)
Two Book Set by D. Walsh Gilbert: Misneach: A Story of Kidnap, Enslavement & Colonialism -and- Finches in Kilmainham
In Misneach: A Story of Kidnap, Enslavement & Colonialism, D. Walsh Gilbert contexualizes a narrative about the residues of British colonization. The verse-story structure allows a reader to engage with harsh historical truths through the medium of poetry by creating the fictional narrative about a young Irish midwife, Aoife McGuire, who is abducted in Ireland in 1650 and forced to work on a plantation on the island of Montserrat and then later in Colonial New England.

Finches in Kilmainham is is a fictional verse-story of Ann Gallagher, also known as Dill, jailed in 1850s Ireland—just one little girl trying to make her way in the world even as the evils of famine, nationalism, and anti-Catholicism conspire to test her courage and restrain her from finding her true Irish roots. Although Dill and the others represented in the poems are fictional characters, their experiences accurately reflect those of far too many people who suffered through similar ordeals. The stunning lyricism of the poems in this book make their situation all the more poignant.
