Ward Rounds by K. Dale Beernink, M.D.
K. Dale Beernink was a Phi Beta Kappa student at Stanford University, and at Stanford Medical School he distinguished himself as both a clinician and a researcher in immunology. Towards the end of his medical internship at Yale New Haven Hospital, he was diagnosed with chronic myelocytic leukemia, which in 1966 was a fatal disease with a three year survival projection.
He worked as a research fellow at Stanford, founded a chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility, expanded his music repertoire, and wrote poetry about his encounters with people and disease during his internal medical internship. A collection of these poems called Ward Rounds was privately printed by the author before his death in 1969 and subsequently republished in a second edition in 1970. In cooperation with Dr. Richard M. Ratzan and the author's widow, Margaret Rose Beernink Badger, presents a third edition.
